Thanos' story
Thanos is one of the most fascinating and feared characters in the Marvel Universe, with a rich and complex history. This mad Titan, as ruthless as he is intelligent, first appeared in the comics in 1973, before becoming the main antagonist of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The origins of Thanos
Thanos is a major character in the Marvel Universe, both in the comics and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His origins date back to the moon Titan, where he was born into a family of Eternals, a powerful, near-immortal race.
Unlike his brother Eros (Starfox), Thanos was born with Deviant Syndrome, a rare mutation that gives him a monstrous appearance with purple-blue skin. Rejected by others, he developed a fascination for destruction at an early age.
From an early age, Thanos stood out for his exceptional intelligence and Hulk-like brute strength. However, his rejection of society led him to develop an obsession with death itself, embodied in the Marvel universe by Lady Death. This obsession becomes the driving force of his life, leading him to destroy his home planet, Titan, by killing a large part of the population, including his own mother.
Thanos then begins a quest for power, seeking first the Cosmic Cube, also known as the Tesseract, containing the Space Stone, then the Infinity Stones, namely the Stones of Time, Reality, Power, Spirit, Soul and Space, which give him almost limitless abilities.
In the comics, his ambition to please Lady Death leads him to acts of mass destruction.
In the MCU, his goal becomes more noble (in his opinion): to restore balance to the universe by eliminating half the population, a plan he believes is necessary to avoid resource depletion.
What was Thanos' objective?
Thanos' objective in the MCU and the comics differs somewhat, but in both cases it's deeply linked to his obsession with death and its benefits on the destiny of the universe.
In the comics, his love for Lady Death leads him to want to wipe out half the living beings in the universe. He believes this act of destruction will please the personification of death, to whom he devotes an almost religious cult.
This desire to please Death becomes a personal quest, even to the point of becoming an emotional need, all the while blinded by his twisted vision of justice.
In the MCU, Thanos' goal is different, though still based on his twisted vision of altruism. He believes that the universe is in danger due to overpopulation and resource depletion.
To avert universal collapse, he decides to use the six Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all living beings. This plan, he believed, would guarantee prosperity for the survivors, who would be able to live in a world with balanced resources.
Thanos doesn't act as a mere villain or villainess; he has no hatred for anyone. His deep conviction is that his actions are necessary to save the universe. He justifies his slaughter out of a sense of cosmic responsibility, although his methods are deemed morally abhorrent by the Avengers.
After Thanos's first victory in Avengers Infinity War, the events of Avengers Endgame have Thanos defeated, thanks to the intervention of the Avengers. How can we forget Iron, Thor and Captain America's fight against the Mad Titan and the Iron Man snap?
Who's stronger than Thanos?
Thanos may be one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, but there are many heroes and entities who can rival and even surpass his strength.
Of course, we're not talking about entities such as The Guardian, The Eternals, or even Doctor Doom (with Thanos' horrible death in the comics!), who are clearly superior to Thanos.
Instead, let's look at characters Thanos has already faced in the MCU who could rival or even dominate the Mad Titan:
• Captain Marvel, whose powers are linked to her absorption of the Tesseract. She can control various forms of energy. In the MCU, she is considered one of the greatest forces capable of facing Thanos. Had it not been for Thanos' use of the Force Stone and Captain Marvel's overconfidence, she might have been able to defeat him.
• Doctor Strange is also a formidable threat to Thanos, thanks in no small part to his mystical powers and his use of the Time Stone, as seen in their epic confrontation in Avengers: Infinity War. Plus, let's imagine for a moment the Doctor Strange of the What If...? series. More impressive, no?
• Ultron, endowed with the most advanced artificial intelligence and the ability to infinitely replicate himself, could surpass Thanos by exploiting his strategic flaws and neutralizing his forces even before he uses the Infinity Gauntlet. Ultron has no fear or need for humanity, which makes him implacable in the face of Thanos' emotional determination. I won't even mention his version of What If...?
Thor and Scarlet Witch are also totally feasible candidates.
Thor's strength is unquestionable, especially in the final battle of Avengers Infinity War, where Stormbreaker surpassed Thanos's 6 Infinity Stones in terms of power...
Scarlet Witch's desire for revenge can be untameable, and Thanos would probably not have survived Wanda Maximoff's restraint if he hadn't used his rain of fire on the battlefield during the final confrontation of Avengers Endgame.
To finish with a little comic book history, Adam Warlock - yes, yes, the one in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has already defeated Thanos, even removing his glove.
So there are plenty of contenders, aren't there?
What's Thanos' weakness?
Thanos, though fearsomely powerful, is not without weaknesses.
One of his main weaknesses is his ego and need for recognition, particularly in the comics, where he is constantly seeking the approval of Lady Death. This quest for unrequited love leads him to make irrational decisions and strategic mistakes.
Betrayals such as his own adopted daughters Gamora and Nebula are the perfect example.
Another weakness is that, despite his physical power, Thanos remains vulnerable without the Infinity Gauntlet. When stripped of the Stones, heroes like Thor, Iron Man and Captain America are able to stand up to him, as seen in Avengers Endgame.
He's also vulnerable to psychological and emotional attacks, as evidenced by Mantis. Let's be honest, if Star-Lord hadn't snapped in that scene in Avengers Infinity War, could Thanos have been defeated?
His arrogance often leads him to underestimate his enemies, a recurring flaw in his battles against the Avengers.
Who is Thanos' brother?
Thanos has a brother called Eros, also known as Starfox. Unlike Thanos, Eros wasn't born with deviant syndrome, so he's an Eternal with a human appearance and a much more sociable, pleasant temperament. He's a light-hearted character, without his brother's overweening ambitions.
He possesses the power to manipulate the emotions of others, enabling him to influence feelings and charm those around him. We first see him in The Eternals in the post-generic scene.
The relationship between Thanos and Eros is complex and tense. While Thanos is obsessed with death and destruction, Eros leads a life of pleasure and freedom. This total opposition between the two brothers often brings them into conflict, with Eros trying to temper his brother's destructive actions, although he is often powerless in the face of Thanos's overwhelming might.
